WINSTONgolf, nestled in Mecklenburg’s wild and romantic countryside in Germany, is a high-end golf resort with 45 holes — WINSTONlinks, WINSTONopen and WINSTONkranich. It is known for major events like the WINSTONgolf Senior Open on the Legends Tour. But it is also known for another quality: keeping the same playing standard across the year.
The engine behind that consistency is simple, unique and bold: 123 Husqvarna robot mowers look after the fairways and semi-rough. Yes, 123 mowers! They go out on a fixed rhythm. They mow more often, so each run removes only a small amount of grass and the surface stays more even.
How it works: Each mower gets virtual boundaries and a schedule. Most runs happen in the evening and at night. With many units in the field, the course is covered quickly and evenly.
That results in a more relaxed round for players, since they will not encounter mowers during play. Due to the size of the fleet, if one mower needs maintenance, there is no problem, as the others keep the plan on track. Because schedules are computer controlled, the greenkeeping team — led by Jordan Tschimperle — can follow the tee sheet and reschedule around events or a busy morning.
But not only the players benefit, the robots have more advantages: architect David Krause designed the links for one standard mowing height across the dunes. The compact Husqvarna robots fit between the dunes where a regular mower cannot.
WINSTONgolf chose this unique set-up to create high-quality courses. The frequent light cuts result in a more even surface, also after busy days or tournaments. And since the machines are light, there is less weight on the turf, which supports turf health and drainage. And as the team spends fewer hours riding machines, it leaves them with more time to work on edges, bunkers, repairs and presentation of the course.
Next to the quality advantages, it also helps the numbers: the robots are powered by solar panels, saving an estimated 5,000 litres of diesel per year, which means lower costs and lower emissions.
A truly unique approach to robotic and electric mowing that WINSTONgolf has perfected to the max. If you want to learn more you can meet Stefanie Merchel from WINSTONgolf and Sebastian Spoerl from Husqvarna at the GCAE Conference in Madeira, 10–12 November 2025.
Stefanie will be attending as a golf course owner, and we are proud to call Husqvarna one of our Valuable Sponsors! Both Stefanie & Sebastian are happy to share how they run it day to day. If you cannot make it to the conference but want to know more: reach out and we will connect you with them.
