Gordon Moir (Director of Greenkeeping) is recognised as this months Champion of the Green for his outstanding management of The St Andrews Links golf courses and their significant contribution towards the community.
As the first Open Championship venue to achieve initial certification and subsequent re-certification, Gordon Moir and his team are helping to demonstrate the valuable role that a golf facility can play within a community; both in terms of land management and as a place of social interaction across all age groups and genders.
Gordon Moir explained, “At the heart of St Andrews Links are the people, and ensuring that the courses continue to provide opportunities for both employment and social interaction is a key focus. The OnCourse® programme has allowed us to tell our story and give people an insight into some of the great work that is being done. Some of the ideas within the programme have helped guide us to new practices, enabling us to reduce our waste production while increasing our energy and water conservation”.
With great programmes such as the St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association, support for smaller local clubs and a willingness to educate enthusiastic Greenkeepers within the industry, St Andrews is demonstrating how a golf facility can be more than just a golfing destination for communities.
